Description

For the "15 Degrees" project, our clients approached us with a vision to extend their home by transforming a dated rear area into a vibrant, multi-zone living, dining, and entertaining space.

They didn’t just want a large open-plan area; instead, they desired distinct zones that would naturally flow together while serving different purposes.

We crafted a layout that places the dining space centrally within the extension, utilising a built-in bench arrangement to create a cozy, fixed-seating dining nook. This placement is intentional: since dining often happens in the evening, we prioritized other areas for natural light, leaving the dining zone cozily nestled in the middle.

The living area, by contrast, is positioned to take full advantage of large glazed openings and a unique strip window that follows the roof pitch. This high-level glazing captures the morning sun, allowing light to filter through the space beautifully at the start of the day.  By carefully modelling sun paths, we ensured that natural light animates the interior in a thoughtful and intentional way.

A charming breakfast corner was designed to capture the morning light, featuring a single-pane window and a quirky shape that adds character. This corner and a covered outdoor seating area flow together seamlessly, offering a spot to sit outdoors whether it’s sunny or drizzling, with timber cladding running continuously to blur the line between inside and out.

The slanted roof is finished with a sedum green roof, a living roof system planted with low-maintenance, drought-resistant vegetation. As well as softening the appearance of the extension when viewed from above, the sedum roof improves biodiversity, enhances insulation, and helps manage rainwater runoff — adding both environmental and visual value to the project.

Externally, we matched brickwork carefully and introduced a timber-clad roof edge to create a visually pleasing detail. Hidden gutters and a cedar soffit ensured the extension looked just as elegant from the upper floors. Inside, the clients introduced their own bold colour choices to complement our neutral material palette, resulting in a space that feels both cohesive and full of personality.

In the end, "15 Degrees" is a perfect example of how thoughtful zoning, natural light, and custom detailing come together to create a flexible and inviting modern extension.
