Description

Escabeche is a much-loved Spanish tapas restaurant in West Bridgford, Nottingham, known for its lively outdoor terrace and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. The brief was to extend this experience throughout the year, increasing capacity while preserving the character that had made the restaurant a local favourite.

Rather than creating a conventional enclosed extension, we designed a space that retained the openness and informality of the original timber pergola while introducing the comfort and thermal performance needed for year-round dining. A highly insulated glazed structure sits behind a carefully coordinated timber framework, creating a seamless visual connection between the enclosed restaurant and existing terrace.

The design was developed around both customer experience and commercial performance. Seating, furniture and circulation were carefully planned to increase capacity without compromising the relaxed atmosphere. Six-panel bi-fold doors allow the frontage to open fully onto the terrace during warmer months, while providing a comfortable enclosed dining space when the weather changes.

Technical coordination played an important role in achieving the clean, effortless appearance. An off-the-shelf roof system was carefully integrated with the timber structure, aligning the roof members, glazing bars and timber linings to create a consistent architectural rhythm. The constrained footprint also required precise coordination of the walls and bi-fold openings.

Material choices reinforce the restaurant’s Mediterranean identity. Soft green glazed tiles add texture and subtle colour, complemented by natural timber and generous glazing. A carefully positioned picture window frames views towards the nearby church spire while incorporating a 60-minute fire-rated glazed screen as part of the building’s fire strategy.

3D modelling was used throughout the process to coordinate the architecture, signage and branding, ensuring that the restaurant's identity became an integral part of the design rather than an afterthought.

The completed extension increased the restaurant’s capacity while allowing its popular terrace to remain usable throughout the year. The result is a light, flexible dining environment that extends Escabeche’s established character rather than competing with it.
