Design Haus were commissioned to extend and modify this 1920s family home.
The design focused on the specific ways in which the new spaces would be used, and the positioning of the windows and doors were aligned to suit the individual pieces of furniture that were expected to be used in the space.
Externally, we chose to celebrate the difference between the old and new parts of the house, with the bold finish of the wood creating a contrast with the existing structure.
Internally, we retained the large openings between the existing house and the new extension, which permitted spacious flow through the home and increased the natural light in the original house. The mid-century, minimalist interior design compliments these aspects rather than distracting from them.
The black stained timber creates a stark contrast to the existing brickwork. The black door and window frames ensure that the bright interiors full of movement and colour are almost framed as a ‘third’ material.
Our clients were delighted with the result, “It’s better than we ever imagined”. “We all have our individual areas that are our go-to and it isn’t just about the extra space, it’s about what it’s brought to our quality of life as a family.”
