Description

These types of former agricultural buildings, which supported traditional farming, are now inefficient for modern production and have often outlived their original use. Transforming them for residential purposes can be challenging in terms of planning permission, as preserving the original shape and structure of the building is key.  These conversions also create intriguing design challenges in terms of including all of the rooms and utilities needed for a modern family home; requiring careful consideration of layouts and staircases.

Our clients approached us to assist with the adaption of an existing design proposal to suit their specific needs, working with the form of the Dutch barn and the views of the surrounding landscape.

Working with the pre-determined form of the barn, we sought to rearrange the interior layout to enhance the views of the surrounding landscape from within. Service spaces, such as the utility space, boot room and downstairs W.C were relocated within the building to provide views across the garden and further landscape from recreational rooms, such as the kitchen, dining and living room.  The open layout meant that aspects such as a bespoke staircase, designed by our client, could be integrated into the interior design planning.

For our client’s specific needs, it was necessary to ensure level access was provided across all rooms. And, within the garden, where changes in levels occurred, accessible ramps were provided to allow ease of access across the whole site.

The exterior of a Dutch barn is typically clad in wooden siding, hence the reason for us wanting to remain in this style. This also formed a distinct contrast with the surrounding red brick buildings, which contain red clay tiles.  A variety of typical barns also have stone or brick to the lower walls. In this instance, we sought to remain in keeping with the traditional aesthetic, selecting zinc cladding in place of stone or brick to form a modern style of Dutch barn.
