Description

Our clients approached Design Haus to add a contemporary rear extension to their current property. They wanted the new extension to match the existing rendered aesthetic at the front of their home, which contained a red brick base to cill height and stucco render to the remaining areas. Their desire was for us to design a modern extension that contained a large kitchen, dining and living space for family and entertaining guests, whilst also creating large views to overlook the garden and let in light.

At the rear, the original property contained a single door to access the garden and a few standard windows overlooking the space, which made the house feel dark and disconnected from the garden and exterior area.

Design Haus’s approach, while working collaboratively with them on all aspects of the concept design stage, was to remove and reconfigure portions of the external and internal walls on the ground floor. This provided a substantial, multi-purpose kitchen diner at the rear of the property and allowed for the creation of two large openings facing the garden.

Bi-folding doors were used within the openings to maximise both the view and accessibility to the external spaces. We also sought to maximise the amount of light within the new space whilst working with the original aesthetic of the property, which contained full height glazing to the eaves on a portion of the existing property. Therefore, seeking to mirror the composition of the elevation, the new gable included glazing similar in style to maintain consistency across the façade.

A juxtaposition was created between the new and proposed roof with the use of slate tiles across the extension. The grey tone of slate was selected to blend with the new windows, where our clients preferred the appearance of a dark grey finish for both the windows and fascia boards.

The result is a beautiful, light filled room, which the family can enjoy entertaining friends and family for years to come.
