Description

Musters Road is a detached Edwardian family home nestled in the heart of West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.  This elegant property occupies a prominent corner plot, with the front and side elevation visible from the road within this leafy residential neighbourhood.

Our clients were captivated by the home's original period features and generous garden. However, the outdated configuration of rooms posed a challenge for modern family living.

The starting point for the brief called for an extension to the home with contemporary glass sliding doors whilst ensuring the design remained sympathetic to the property's period heritage. But through design conversations, we established additional space was not the main requirement. The clients just needed their current space reconfiguring to meet their needs.  This shifted the focus of the project to deliver a property that creatively reimagined the internal spaces within the house.

By removing unsympathetic additions to the rear, such as the coal shed and a 1970’s lean-to conservatory, we choose to reduce the dwelling's footprint, which allowed us to focus on reconfiguring the ground floor interior, resulting in a cohesive and functional layout that truly reflected the client's vision.

As a nod to the original brief, an open-plan living area suitable for modern family life was created through the removal of several internal walls.  Rather than extending the house, a floating cedar deck was added on the south and east sides, enhancing the home's exterior, allowing for a seamless transition from the kitchen and living room into the garden.

The design features a mix of modern materials and the interior design is heavily influenced by the mid-century modern aesthetic. One distinguishing design feature is the use of 'Ketley bricks' for the exterior cladding, typically seen in commercial constructions rather than residential buildings. The Staffordshire blue Ketley brick slips create a striking contrast against the traditional red brick and creating a truly unique family home.
