Design Haus Architecture has remodelled and extended this former period coach house dating back to 1907 in Nottingham to create a spacious living space for our client. The Coach House draws upon the client's request to allow light into the new space throughout the day.
Design Haus’s approach to tackle the narrow plot and loose the sense of narrowness internally was to create subtle divisions within the internal rooms using intermediate Crittall doors that maintained the view to the garden at the rear but allowed the client to close areas and provide privacy.
The existing property had an attractive secluded rear garden that originally belonged to the stables that served the coach house. This was not overly visible from the rear of the property due to an existing conservatory between the garden and house, accessed via a utility room.
Design Haus Architecture therefore sought to re-establish the connection from the kitchen and living space to the secluded garden, removing the blocking conservatory and utility areas, forming an open plan living room and kitchen with glazed Crittall doors which now provide a direct view from the front entrance and the guest bedroom at the front of the property, to the garden.
The new shared living, dining and kitchen space features two impressive up-and-over windows, one facing the front of the property and one facing the rear towards the garden, both of which are visible when standing at the hob on the kitchen island. Due to its orientation, the windows face East and West, therefore bringing sunlight into the space throughout the day. There is also an additional flat roof light over the dining area to bring light further into the property which abuts a boundary wall. The external render wraps the single-storey extension tying it into the existing semi-rendered section of the existing house.
