Description

Our client approached Design Haus with a vision to add a rear extension to their detached property to provide a quite space to read, a view connecting them to their garden and a space to gather with friends.

The front elevation facing the street consists of prominent gable roof resembling an Art and Crafts style. In the case of Pixie House, the gable is a steep pitch, triangular section that projects outward from the main structure, creating a strong line from the ridge of the main roof. The gable contains wide bargeboards, stained black with a light stucco finish to the gable, enhancing the Art and Crafts appearance of the house. Hence, our client playfully referring to their home as the Pixie House, due to its playful characteristics.

Because of these features to the front, the client's wish was for the rear extension to have a similar form. The house now features a Siberian Larch clad extension with an offset overhanging pitch roof and slate roof to match the main house.  A large single pane of glass and a low-level cill height enables our client to sit in front of the window and overlook the rear garden. With the addition of the large pane of glass, following the entrance into the property, a direct view has been created from the dining area, through the new rear extension and directly through to the garden. This gives a new depth to the interior space and brings light into the home. Simple, paired-back, interior design and styling in this space allows the view to the garden to take centre-stage.

Creating more space for planting in the rear garden area and a section of external seating was important to our client, therefore, incorporating this into the design of the extension was a key consideration. With the window in place, adding a low-level external bench surrounded by planting was exactly the transition they client sought.
