Description

Set within one of West Bridgford's established conservation areas, The Valley House transformed an existing family home into a generous contemporary residence, carefully balancing family life, landscape, heritage and proportion.

As with every project we undertake, the design began from the inside out, focusing first on how the family wanted to live. Working closely with our clients, we developed a layout around the rhythms of everyday life, creating a generous and connected series of spaces. As the internal arrangement evolved, the proportions of the new spaces naturally began to echo one another. This informed a refinement of the architecture, with existing dormers enlarged, window positions adjusted and the original building subtly reshaped to create the calm, balanced composition seen today.

The result was an elegant façade that appeared almost symmetrical, despite being the product of extensive remodelling. The architecture sits comfortably within its conservation setting while providing the space and flexibility required for modern family life.

The site’s mature trees and protected landscape played an important role in shaping the proposals. Rather than treating these existing features as limitations, we used them to inform the position of the extension, landscaping and outdoor spaces.

The relationship between house and garden was equally important. At the rear, the position of the swimming pool was reconsidered so that the garden's prime evening-sun position could instead become an outdoor entertaining space. Generous terraces, planting and a bespoke timber pergola now create a series of spaces designed around how the family uses the garden.

The pergola carefully wraps around an established mature tree, celebrating rather than competing with it, while long sightlines through the house connect the entrance and main living spaces with the garden beyond.

3D modelling and immersive virtual reality allowed the clients to explore these relationships and refine the design throughout the process, supporting a collaborative approach to the development of the home and landscape.

The Valley House demonstrates how thoughtful residential architecture can emerge from careful observation rather than grand gestures. By responding to the existing house, mature landscape and the way the family wanted to live, the project created a contemporary home that feels both enduring and entirely at home within its historic setting.
