Description

We were approached to provide a replacement residential dwelling on a narrow plot in a Nottinghamshire village which met the family’s specific needs.

We worked in close conversation with our clients to design this home to meet their specific spatial requirements whilst dealing with the narrow constraints of the plot and remaining within the outline of the original one-storey building.

Thomas’s house was formed to create a sensitively designed family home to accommodate the needs of its residents. The family is a family of five, two parents and three children, who have lived in the area for ten years. When he was a baby, Thomas suffered a high level spinal cord injury, resulting in paralysation from the neck down. Due to this, Thomas is a full-time wheelchair user and has 24-hour care.

Forming a single storey for Thomas at the front of the property was crucial to give Thomas the space he and his care team require.

With Thomas and his team at the front of the property, spaces for the family were placed at the rear to allow a direct connection with the garden. This layout aids Thomas’s ability to interact independently with the family area via a straight corridor to the living, dining and kitchen space, which can be viewed directly from his room.

Creating a long-term home, that is well insulated, provides good ventilation and is sustainable was also very important to us and the family. The material palette selected seeks to touch on the local use of brickwork with a variation in tone that blends with the cedar cladding selected for the first floor for its sustainable credentials, durability and attractive appearance.

We worked closely with the local authority to create a design that would not only meet the criteria set by the planning officer and satisfy local residents but also meet Thomas’ specific needs.
